Understanding Psychosis: A Case Report

Psychosis as understood by the lay population (and portrayed by the media) constitutes a very narrow interpretation of an otherwise broad concept in psychiatry and mental health. Unfortunately, this misunderstanding has penetrated the medical field as well with many practitioners at all levels from medical assistants to physicians. This has many implications, from the social stigma associated with carrying this title to poor treatment efficacy.

This case report and presentation show that confusion in the terminology used to define psychosis can lead to poor history-taking and progress monitoring during treatment and offers an alternative definition of psychosis as a continuum of symptomatology rather than discrete categories (though the latter may still be a useful way to define the spectrum).
